My Approach to Treating Patients
I enjoy taking the time to sit down with each patient (and family members, if possible) and really listen to their problems and concerns. After performing any necessary physical examinations and/or XRays, a tentative diagnosis is established. The patient's condition and cause is then explained in great detail, frequently with the use of models and/or handouts. I then allow the patient to select from a long list of possible treatment modalities, thus enabling them to select which ones might best meet their particular needs. When one particular treatment has not proven effective, I am quick to recommend alternatives. In some people, alternative medicine treatments have even proven the most helpful. I have found that, by far, the majority of patients are managed conservatively without surgery. However, if surgery is indeed the best option, then it is clearly recommended (but not insisted upon).
Patients who have questions after they have left our office are referred to my nurse, Emily, who can usually answer the question immediately. However, if she needs to refer to me, or the patient needs to speak directly with me, then this is answered and the patient is called back within the same day.
We attempt to continue to improve upon our patient care, as well as upon ourselves. I go to several national meetings each year, continuing to improve my patient skills and expand my base of knowledge. In 1997 I performed a survey of my patients. 95% of patients would refer their family members to my office. 98% rated their experience with Dr. Bright as good or excellent. 98% of patients stated that, after the first office visit, they completely understood their diagnosis and its treatment.
I truly do enjoy being an orthopaedic surgeon, and look forward to continuing to serve you.
