My approach to treating patients

Welcome to the website of Joseph H. Guettler, M.D., a member of Performance Orthopedics and Beaumont Sports Medicine. I created this website to familiarize you with myself, as well as to introduce you to my medical staff and the services that we provide.

Briefly about myself -- As a native of Royal Oak, Michigan, I received my undergraduate degree from Valparaiso University where I was a four-year Division I wrestler and graduated summa cum laude. I then attended Northwestern University Medical School and graduated as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. I returned to Royal Oak and completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at William Beaumont Hospital. I have recently returned upon completing a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Duke University. While at Duke, I served as team physician for the athletes of Duke University, North Carolina Central University, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Carolina Cobras Arena Football Team.

As an orthopedic surgeon trained in sports medicine, I take a unique approach to patient care. Whether you are a high level athlete, or simply someone who wishes to remain active, I make sure that the treatment is tailored to your individual needs. I, along with my medical staff, trainers, and physical therapists, utilize a team approach to ensure that your result, whether you have been treated conservatively or operatively, is optimal.

Once you set foot in Performance Orthopedics, you will realize that you are not in "just another doctor's office." You will be greeted by a friendly, motivated staff who will introduce you to this positive, enthusiastic environment. After meeting the doctor, you will meet the physical therapists and trainers who will help to hasten your recovery. As the patient, you will soon realize that you are really part of a team, and that the team's responsibility is to ensure the best possible care for its main participant -- you.

At Performance Orthopedics, we specialize in sports medicine. What is sports medicine? Sports medicine is simply a unique approach to your problem, whether run-of-the-mill, or extremely complex. Principles of sports medicine include:

-Timely care of your injury or problem

-Minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery

-Advanced techniques for the treatment of cartilage, bone, and ligament injury

-Latest approaches to shoulder, elbow, and knee repair, reconstruction, or replacement

-Care that is specifically designed for, and tailored to the needs of the athlete or individual

-Advanced rehabilitation

My particular interests include:

-Treatment of complex cartilage injury/loss with advanced cartilage restoration techniques

-Women's sports medicine

-Sports medicine in the aging athlete ("Boomeritis")

-Advanced techniques for knee ligament reconstruction

-Disorders of the shoulder and elbow in throwing athletes

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and introduce you to the Performance Orthopedics approach to patient care!
