Dr. Mark Wood was born and raised in North Carolina. He received his bachelor's degree from North Carolina State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and completed medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning the degree of Doctor of Medicine with Honors. He continued his training in Orthopaedic Surgery at UNC prior to earning Board Certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He is married and has two daughters and a son.

Dr. Wood’s focus is on the diagnosis and treatment of knee and shoulder injuries and disorders. His specialty interests are in arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery, with an emphasis on rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability, and knee ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

Dr. Wood continues to be recognized for his achievements and excellence to the profession and his unbending dedication to his patients and community. He provides Sports Medicine coverage for NCFC Youth, serves as the Sports Medicine Doctor for Trinity Christian Academy and is the Team Physician Supervisor for both organization's Athletic Trainers. He has expertise in youth sports overuse and ACL injury prevention and directs educational collaboratives with the FIFA/US Soccer/Depuy Sports Medicine program, the Carolina Railhawks, WakeMed, SafeKids USA, the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) and currently with NCFC Youth. He has presented his research at the local, regional and national levels and has multiple publications in the medical literature.

He is a founding member of Wake Orthopaedics, a practice that was created, built and remains committed to patient satisfaction and meeting the individual needs of every patient. In addition to his primary focus on clinical patient care, Dr. Wood also balances leadership and executive medical director appointments. He serves in multiple administrative roles that are focused on the patient and family-centered care approach by creating the highest quality and best patient experience at the lowest cost of care in the region. His work with WakeMed Key Community Care Accountable Care Organization (WKCC ACO), WakeMed Health and Hospitals and local sub-specialty surgeons is focused on navigating through the ACA Health Care Reform evolution and keeping the patient and family as the top priority.

Dr. Wood believes that providing patient education and involving the patient in the treatment plan are critical to expectations and outcomes. The HEALTH LIBRARY on this website is available for patient education which provides videos, information, resources, and on-line printable material to help make decision-making, treatment, and recovery as quick and pain-free as possible.

When he's not tending to patients, Dr. Wood enjoys tennis, boating, fishing, snow skiing and traveling with his family.
