My approach to treating patients

Dr. Viess is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon, with fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery.

Dr. Viess is a native of San Mateo, California. After earning his bachelors degree from Duke University, he received his medical doctorate from Chicago Medical School, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He then completed two years of a general surgery residency at UC San Francisco, before completing his orthopaedic residency at St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco. After residency, Dr. Viess added to his training with a fellowship in sports medicine at the Lake Tahoe Orthopaedic Institute.

Dr. Viess is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. Since 2007, Dr. Viess has served as an orthopaedic surgeon for the Oakland Athletics. He recently became a director of sports medicine at ValleyCare Hospital in Pleasanton.

Dr. Viess’ practice is focused on arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine, joint replacement, and fracture care. His special interest is in arthroscopic reconstruction of the shoulder and knee.

Dr. Viess holds staff privileges at ValleyCare Medical Center and San Ramon Regional Medical Center. He also serves as the team physician for Granada High School.
